Hip Replacement Surgery: When It Is Needed and How Recovery Works

Hip replacement surgery is a proven treatment for severe hip arthritis, avascular necrosis, fracture-related joint damage, and long-standing hip pain that limits movement. The procedure replaces the damaged ball-and-socket joint surfaces with artificial implants designed to reduce pain and improve mobility.

When hip replacement may be advised

It may be recommended when pain affects walking, sleep, work, or daily activities and when medicines, exercises, walking support, or injections no longer provide enough relief. X-rays and clinical examination help decide whether replacement is the right option.

What happens during recovery

Most patients begin assisted walking soon after surgery under supervision. Recovery includes wound care, pain control, physiotherapy, hip precautions, and progressive strengthening. The aim is to return to safe walking, sitting, stair climbing, and routine activities.

Long-term care

Patients should follow exercise advice, avoid high-impact activities unless cleared by the surgeon, maintain weight, and attend follow-up visits to monitor implant health.
